Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refer to a group of brain development disorders. These disorders are usually diagnosed in young children by the time they turn 2 to 3 years of age and are characterized by limitations in social interaction, communication, and repeated behaviors. They’re classified on a “spectrum” because the symptoms and severity differ between individuals.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”What causes autism spectrum disorders?” open=”off” _builder_version=”3.22.5″ title_text_shadow_horizontal_length=”0em” title_text_shadow_vertical_length=”0em” title_text_shadow_blur_strength=”0em” body_text_shadow_horizontal_length=”0em” body_text_shadow_vertical_length=”0em” body_text_shadow_blur_strength=”0em”]

We don’t fully know what causes ASD. We do know that there is no one cause of Autism, just like there’s no one kind of it. In the last five years, scientists have made large strides to understanding Autism and have identified gene changes associated with these disorders. However, there seems to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors that increase a child’s risk for Autism, in which none have been made official. There’s still a lot for researchers to learn about Autism and how it can be prevented and treated, and even cured. That’s why we want to help spread the word and financially support autism research.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”What are the symptoms of ASDs?” open=”off” _builder_version=”3.22.5″ title_text_shadow_horizontal_length=”0em” title_text_shadow_vertical_length=”0em” title_text_shadow_blur_strength=”0em” body_text_shadow_horizontal_length=”0em” body_text_shadow_vertical_length=”0em” body_text_shadow_blur_strength=”0em”]

There are a wide variety of symptoms and behaviors and they can range in severity. Some appear gradually, others are more sudden. They are often noticed in 1–3 year olds. Some of these symptoms include difficulty with social interactions, difficulty with communication (both verbal and nonverbal), repetitive behaviors or a need for consistency in routine, sensory difficulties (such as being painfully sensitive to sounds, textures, tastes, or smells), and unusual abilities (such as remarkable talent in music, art, or memory).

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”How is ASDs treated?” open=”off” _builder_version=”3.22.5″ title_text_shadow_horizontal_length=”0em” title_text_shadow_vertical_length=”0em” title_text_shadow_blur_strength=”0em” body_text_shadow_horizontal_length=”0em” body_text_shadow_vertical_length=”0em” body_text_shadow_blur_strength=”0em”]

While there is no cure or one treatment for ASDs, there are certain treatments that can help, especially with Early Intervention Programs. Treatments often include a various therapies such as, behavioral therapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and specialized training. Educational interventions, support groups, and psycho-education are also often part of these treatments.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s statistics show that about 1 in 68 children in the U.S. are on the Autism Spectrum. It’s 4 to 5 times more common in boys than girls, with an estimated 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls diagnosed in the United States.
